Lustrous, deep-green foliage topped with rose-pink 'turtle head' flowers. Red stems persist most of the season. Spring foliage of bronze, maturing to dark green. Slow to emerge, in keeping with the 'turtle head' characteristic. Attracts butterflies. Deer and rabbit resistant.
Chelone was a Greek God who insulted the other gods and was turned into a turtle.
